Frozen Shoulder

In this condition it is as if the two surfaces of the armpit get stuck together. The adhesion prevents the arm being raised (partially or fully). This could mean the arm may not lift sideways, forward to behind (ie to reach for your wallet or bra-strap). Classically a frozen shoulder affects women who are of menopausal age, or a person who has had previous damage to their shoulder, ie a rotator cuff injury (see above) or a fall onto the shoulder, a jerk to the shoulder etc).

*Pain in the shoulder, typically on the outside of the shoulder near the ball and socket.
*The pain is made worse by lifting the arm, reaching behind (to do bra-strap, reach for wallet, cant reach to brush your hair or shave).
*The pain is worst at night time, often waking the patient up.
*Painful to lie on the affected side
*Sudden unguarded movements causing waves of pain down the arm.
