1) What Is Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial Osteopathy is as a very gentle, subtle use of hand holds and contact with the cranium (head), to release tension. We touch and hold an area lightly till it naturally releases. However this principle is not only confined to the cranium. Similar techniques are also applied to the sacrum (end of the spine) and can even be applied to other body regions.

2) Why don't we see much “happening” during a treatment?

Cranial Osteopathy works with very small amounts of touch/movement, often imperceptible to an observer. However, as anyone who has had a treatment would tell you, the effects are definitely present and very relieving.

3) Are there any side effects?

There are no known side effects from Cranial Osteopathy treatment. It is so safe, that it can be given to new born babies, the frail and the elderly.

4) Do I need to see my GP first before bringing my baby?

No. However, as Paediatric Osteopaths are not doctors, for certain conditions such as colic, reflux or excessive crying, any underlying illness first has to be excluded. See your GP first. When the doctors cant find anything wrong, try us.

5) Do I need to have my baby checked?

Many parents bring in their new born even when nothing seems to be wrong - simply for an after-birth check up. If the labour was difficult or the birth needed intervention (ie ventouse, forceps Caesarean etc) we always suggest having your baby checked out by a Cranial Osteopath.

6 What age can I bring my baby in for a treatment?

We see babies just after they are born, in fact anytime you and baby feel able to come along.

7 How are older toddlers & children treated?

Usually children of all ages love being massaged. For the very young ones we play “pretend games” on their backs, or let them watch videos; or they can lie with a parent whilst they have their treatment. Sometimes we treat them whilst they are feeding, or engaged in playful activity. For the older children, many love the massage and can relax during “their” special treatment.

8 Am I too Old to have Cranial Osteopathy?

No! Many senior patients visit regularly. We can help with pain, mobility and especially things like degeneration, wear and tear, arthritis, etc. We cant cure old age, but we can make you more comfortable or simply keep you going. Whether its a thumb joint that hurts or a creaky neck pain.

9 How many treatments will I need?

Treatments vary enormously. Some patients get fixed in one visit, some need a course. The average for a course of treatment is about 3 - 6 visits. If you come in sooner its usually less.

10 Is “Cranial Osteopathy” covered by Insurance?

No. But “Osteopathy” and “Paediatric Osteopathy” is. It may be possible to have some Cranial techniques as part of your osteopathic management. We can discuss this with you, please call.

11 What is the difference between a “Cranial Osteopath” & a “Sacro-Cranial Therapist”?

Before one can practice Cranial Osteopathy, they have to qualify as an Osteopath first. This is a four year degree course with 2,000 hours of clinical practice. In addition, Osteopaths are regulated by an act of Parliament. This means the general public are protected from unqualified practitioners. The Sacro-Cranial profession does not offer these standards to the general public, though the techniques used are very similar.
