Examination

                   Looking at the problem area
The simple act of observation can tell us many things. From noting your posture, the centre of gravity, leg or arm or neck positions, the colour of the skin, swelling from injuries, movement difficulties, etc… these all provide detailed signs of what might be going on. To do this successfully we need to see as much as possible. For this reason we often request the patient be in their underclothes. However this is not always needed and if you prefer you can be in your swimming garment and attend with a friend if you wish.
                 Palpating the problem area
The next stage is to gently examine the area. From this we learn even more about the problem. Many times the source of the trouble may be some distance away from where the pain if felt. To a trained touch (palpation) we can quickly work out what may be going on. For example if a joint does not move when it should, it may be a sign of deeper soft-tissue problem in the body (as opposed to a primary injury to the joint) ; or if a muscle does not release it’s spasm when lying down it might imply it is trying to ‘protect’ something. Osteopaths are experts at discerning the differing tones in muscle and joint structures. As osteopaths we further sub-divide palpation into three further highly skilled processes:
                 (a) palpation whilst weight bearing (ie standing)
                   (b) palpation during movements (ie ask the patient to bend forward)
                   (c) palpation off weight bearing (ie lying down).
All palpation is carried out very gently. It will help you to understand what is happening and relieve some of the anxiety that often makes pain worse. You feel in safe hands.
                 Specialised tests & clinical procedures
                   For the problem area
Osteopaths are trained extensively. We can carry out a number of specialised tests. These include, as appropriate, neurological (nerve sensitivity) tests, motor (muscle power) test, joint integrity testing, flexibility assessments etc. In addition we have referral status within the medical arena. This we can make qualified referrals for x-ray, MRI, blood tests etc.

                   Foot Notes
                   1) Examination
If at all possible we like to see the patient as fully as possible. This would usually means down to your underclothes. We do however recognise not everybody would feel as comfortable in this state. We have towels which you can use to cover yourself, or you can use your own garments to lay over you when you lie down. If you would rather remain fully clothed during your treatment we ask that you wear soft loose clothing like tracksuits. Please do not wear tight or hard fabrics such as jeans.
                 2) Children
We love children and have toys and books to engage them. In the treatment room we also play baby videos that can help them to settle. Often we have a spare room where a parent can feed their child before or after a treatment.
